Founded in 1940, Bates Technical College is proud to be part of Washington state’s system of 34 public community and technical colleges. For more than eight decades, Bates Tech has served as a vital educational and workforce training resource for Tacoma, Pierce County and the greater South Sound region.
The college began as Tacoma Vocational School, originally operating in the basement of an East Tacoma elementary school as part of the Tacoma School District. Established during a time of great national need, the school provided technical training to prepare skilled workers who supported the World War II defense effort. From its earliest days, Bates Tech was built on a practical and powerful purpose: connecting people with the skills needed to strengthen their futures and serve their communities.
As the school grew, it became an important training center for the region’s workforce. In recognition of longtime Director of Vocational Education Laverne H. Bates, the Tacoma School Board later renamed the institution Bates Vocational Technical Institute.
In 1991, Washington state legislation moved vocational-technical institutes from local school districts into the state community and technical college system. This transition marked an important new chapter for the college, expanding its role as a public higher education institution focused on workforce preparation, student success and community impact.
Today, Bates Tech serves students across three Tacoma campuses and offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs. The college provides career-focused education in a wide range of fields, including advanced manufacturing, business and communications, health sciences, public safety, transportation, trades, STEM, hospitality and education. Students can pursue certificates, certifications, Bachelor of Applied Science, Associate of Applied Science and Associate of Applied Science-Transfer degrees, along with adult education, continuing education, lifelong learning and high school completion options.
