Focuses on personnel management and human resources as implemented within public safety agencies and in accordance with local, state, and federal laws. Areas of concentration include employment law, recruitment, training and development, supervision, discipline, labor relations, benefits, and compensation. Discusses the importance of strategically planning future staffing needs in the context of an agency’s budget environment.
Outcomes
  • Students will compare personnel management vs. human resource management.
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of a diverse workplace and mul􀆟cultural society.
  • Students will discuss employment law to include Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA), Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), including how to apply these laws to persons, departments, occupations, and organizations.
  • Students will summarize the collective bargaining process to include contract negotiations and creating collective bargaining agreements.
  • Case studies will be used to explore potential problems and solutions to human resource issues.
